A stretch of U.S. Highway 53 was shut down and evacuations ordered on Thursday after a semi rolled over and spilled hazardous materials.
This was close to where the off-ramp for east-bound I-94 connects with 53.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the semi tipped over around 7 a.m.
According to the Eau Claire Fire Department, the semi spilled ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel. Ammonium nitrate is a common farming fertilizer and can be highly explosive.
Eau Claire Fire said it worked with the DNR and state ag department to minimize any amount of material getting into any sewer drains.
Crews were on the scene for about eight hours, and Highway 53 reopened around 3 p.m.
