BOSCOBEL, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Residents of grant county is cleaning up debris after a destructive tornado touched down near Boscobel.
Initial damage assessments by fire departments in the area show six homes were destroyed. Fifteen others had damage left by Saturday night’s storm. About two dozen barns and sheds were also damaged.
Kathleen Lawver took shelter in a pantry at her niece’s home just outside Boscobel as the storm tore the roof off of the garage and parts of the house – and destroyed their barn.
“We started hearing crashes and bangs, we were getting insulation in our mouth, coughing and spitting out insulation,” said Lawver.
“I just remember thinking, I hope it doesn’t last too long, i hope the thing that we’re under doesn’t collapse, saying my prayers. I think it was those concrete walls of that pantry probably that saved our lives. We’re all talking about it, walking out of the house in one piece and that’s just really what you have to keep thinking about,” said Lawver.
Lawver said it probably lasted minutes but felt much longer.
Grant county emergency management says no injuries have been reported as a result of the storm.
