Trial underway to allow children ages six months to four years to receive the COVID-19 vaccine

Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A trial is underway to get the final age group eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, those age six months to 4 years.

Anna Rodriguez took her twin four year old boys to UW Health to get their first Moderna doses last Tuesday.

She says the risk of her sons getting COVID-19 outweighed the risk of the trial.

She explains the test is a blind one. Meaning at this point they don’t know whether or not the boys got placebo or Moderna.

Fortunately, this trial is designed that when a participant becomes eligible for an FDA approved vaccine, they can un-blind. Meaning we can find out whether they received an actual vaccine or placebo, so that we won’t miss out on them getting the best protection they can, but in the meantime we are helping them move forward this important study.

So far the boys have not experienced any symptoms.

Rodriguez keeps an electronic diary and will be sharing information with the trial for the next 14 months.
