UWEau Claire Chancellor explains that peer pressure is key to keeping everyone safe

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – UW-Eau Claire students continue to arrive on campus ahead of the start of school on September 2.  According to Chancellor James Schmidt, UWEC is closely following recommendations and guidelines from the CDC as well as state and local health departments.

Schmidt says he’s met with bar owners on water street earlier this week, part of what he called the “water street” summit to limit the amount of patrons and encourage the wearing of masks. The chancellor believes “peer pressure” will be key in trying to keep everyone safe.

Chancellor James Schmidt said, “Generally we’re good midwesterners. If they know there’s a rule and there’s broad buy-in from the student body, we’re really expecting the students to be doing some social pressure.”

“I get a lot of emails and phone calls from students who reach out and are concerned and they want to make sure everyone is doing their part to keep everybody else safe,” said Schmidt.
