EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – UW-Eau Claire officials say crews should break ground this fall on a new home for Blugolds Basketball.
After years of planning, construction is scheduled to start on the Sonnentag Centre. It will have a 5-thousand-seat events center, fitness facility, and Mayo Clinic facility.
In addition to hosting sports, the Sonnentag Centre could also bring concerts, festivals, and other events to the city since it will seat more fans than Zorn Arena.
Dave Solberg, Eau Claire Interim City Manager said, “There are a number of events that you can’t even get on the list until you’re at a certain seating level or at a certain capacity. So that was one of the initial studies that was done to try and determine that optimum size of the facility because it is larger than the university needs.”
University officials say the hope is for the building to open as early as 2023. Construction was originally supposed to begin last year but was delayed due to the pandemic.
