EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Students at UW-Eau Claire will notice a change in water bottles offered at the dining hall. Officials say Dasani water now comes in aluminum cans as opposed to single-use plastic bottles. They say it aligns with the university’s sustainability efforts.

The coordinator for the initiative, Lily Strehlow, says metal is recycled more than plastic. While there are still some spots on campus that offer plastic water bottles. She says the change is exciting, “It also helps create a culture of sustainability on campus. Our students can see that we care about the environment, that we want them to use material that is more likely to be reused and recycled.”

The chair of public health and environmental studies says a class he’s teaching will collect data on the initiative. From there a decision will be made on whether or not to keep the change.
