LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WLAX/WEAU) — The UW-La Crosse English Department and Murphy Library are benefitting from the largest donation in the school’s history.

Chancellor Joe Gow announced a surprise $2.2 million gift from the estate of Bill and Yvonne Hyde.

Bill taught in the University’s English department for 36 years and Yvonne worked at the library for 38 years.

After Bill’s death in 2015 and Yvonne’s in April 2020, the couple left most of their estate to the UWL Foundation with $1.1 million set aside for the English Department and another $1.1 million for the Murphy library.

UWL staff said the funding will create learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond.
