Video released of Michigan Gov. kidnap plot

Local News

(WLAX/WEUX) – Prosecutors release chilling video from the case of five Michigan men accused of plotting to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan released the video Friday. Prosecutors say the video shows the suspects with weapons, training to kidnap and kill Governor Whitmer.

The FBI used informants wearing wires to capture what they say. There are  more than 100 hours of recordings.

A defense attorney for one of the suspects questions the seriousness of the plot, and says the men were just exercising their constitutional rights.

Mark Satawa, Defense Attorney, said, “We’re talking about guys who want to run around in the woods with guns and say bad things about the government. So, what we’re talking about is a First Amendment right to assembly, a First Amendment right to speech, a Second Amendment right to possess guns and own guns.”

The five men each face a federal charge of conspiracy to kidnap the governor.
