Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – It’s time to get your ice fishing equipment ready. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hosting its free winter fishing weekend. Anglers can fish state waters without a fishing license, as long as the water is open during the winter fishing season.
All other fishing regulations apply, such as fish limits and the size of the fish you can keep. DNR outreach coordinator Teresa Stabo reminds you to be safe out on the ice.
“We want them to be safe, certainly. You know we encourage people to go ice fishing but then in the next breath, we remind them that no ice is truly safe ice. We want them to really be thinking about safety. We want them to be really thinking about the ice conditions,” said Stabo.
The DNR recommends using a spud bar or a weighted rod to test the ice before stepping out onto it.
