(WLAX/WEUX) – Wisconsin Republicans are proposing new legislation to address violent crime in the state. Local legislators announced a “Tougher on Crime” initiative yesterday.
They plan to release bills covering issues like protection for crime victims and consequences for violent and repeat criminals. Law enforcement officials were present to show support for the legislation, including Eau Claire County Sheriff, Ron Cramer, and Altoona Police Chief, Kelly Bakken.
State Representative Jesse James says the goal is to reduce violent crime stats. The one local Democrat says he’s unsure this initiative is the right approach.
“I think we can just do a better job on addressing the violent crimes,” said Representative Jesse James. “It is very important that we consult with our law enforcement partners – sheriff departments and municipalities – and to have them be a part of the solution, because they work with it every day.”
The package of bills is expected to be rolled out later this week.
