Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Governor Evers hopes to legalize recreational marijuana in the next state budget.
Not everyone in Wisconsin is on board with the idea. Patricia Davis of Jackson County says her brother died after a decades-long battle with drug addiction. She says his addiction started with marijuana before he turned to harder drugs. She says people who use it eventually use other drugs.
The Wisconsin Cannabis Association disagrees.
Davis said, “Please, do not make this legal. It’s not easy for our young people to grow up and have goals and complete them. I don’t think they really need this right now.”
“It’s tragic, you know, individual circumstances where people suffer from addiction but at the end of the day, to simply say that this one substance by itself is the cause of all that’s bad is just not proven by science,” said Andrew Hysell of the Wisconsin Cannabis Association.
The CDC says the majority of marijuana users don’t go on to use “harder” substances, but there’s not enough research to determine whether it’s a so-called “gateway drug.”
Evers’ proposal would not legalize the drug for children.
