LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WLAX) — A 54-year-old La Crosse man is in the Lincoln County Jail after being accused of leading deputies on a chase and spraying them with bear spray.

Investigators said the man was stopped around 10 p.m. Thursday near Tomahawk due to his plates not matching the vehicle he was driving. During the stop, he gave authorities a fake name.

The man then sprayed the deputy in the face with what was likely bear spray or a highly concentrated pepper spray and drove away.

After a chase ensued, the man was eventually arrested; however, he sprayed another deputy in the face while he was being detained. The man’s vehicle then caught fire.

The man whose name has not been released is facing numerous charges including battery to a law enforcement officer.
