Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A new resource is available for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. You just have to dial three numbers. The new suicide hotline, 9-8-8, launched last week nationwide.

You can call or text 9-8-8 to be connected with a mental health professional or utilize the suicide lifeline’s online chat room feature. The UW-Eau Claire Counseling Services Director says the new number is easier to memorize and a lot more accessible

“When reaching out for help sometimes having that chat function or the text function is super helpful to just take away the barrier of having to pick up the phone.”

Mcgarth says the number is a great resource for an emergency, but it is not meant to replace counseling services. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will have trained counselors available 24/7. Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin helped author the bill that created the new line.
