A man who authorities say skipped out on unfinished contract work is in custody.
The Eau Claire Police Department announced 33-year old James Dorsey was arrested.
Authorities say someone recently paid Dorsey a $600 deposit to clean snow and ice off a roof, but neither Dorsey, nor anyone from his company, Cedar Creek Restoration came to do the work.
Dorsey was accused in September of several unfinished contract jobs in Eau Claire.
In one case, a homeowner said $2,000 was given to Dorsey to buy shingles for a roof, but he never delivered the materials.
Police are also reminding homeowners to these tips to help avoid fraud:
• Go with a reputable company or contractor that has been recommended to you or checks out from research (Better Business Bureau, Google, etc.)
• Don’t pay a substantial deposit up front. Many contractors for residential ice removal are not asking for payment until the work is completed, or are asking for a small deposit once everything is scheduled and ready to go.
• Make sure your contractor has insurance. This can help cover you if something happens when the person is on your roof, property, etc.
