A former local assemblyman has thrown his hat in the ring for state senate. Democrat Jeff Smith of Eau Claire County has registered as a candidate for the 31st State Senate seat currently held by Senator Kathleen Vinehout of Alma.
Smith represented the 93rd Assembly District from 2007 to 2011.
Senator Vinehout, a democrat, is running for governor.
"Well we have smart, experienced, powerful voices representing us now in the city of Eau Claire with Dana Wachs and Kathleen and I feel like I am in that same category. Strong voice, backbone, someone who has been there before, I know how to manage the people I’ll have to work with."
Smith is the first democrat to register as a candidate for the 31st Senate seat.
Mel Pittman, a republican from Plum City, has also registered.
