Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The man suspected in multiple stabbings on the Apple River Saturday appeared in court yesterday afternoon. 52-year-old Nicolae Miu of Prior Lake, Minnesota was in St. Croix County court for his initial appearance.

During the hearing, the judge set the bond for his release at 1 million dollars. He’s charged with first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree homicide.

Prosecutors say Miu pulled a knife from his pocket and lashed out at a group of younger people during a confrontation on the river Saturday afternoon. According to the criminal complaint, at least two people told investigators the confrontation became physical only after Miu punched a woman in the face.

17-year-old Isaac Schuman from Stillwater, Minnesota died. Two men from Luck, one woman from Burnsville, Minnesota and a man from Elk River, Minnesota were seriously hurt.

Their ages range from 20 to 24. In an interview with an investigator, Miu said what happened was ‘self-defense.’

Family members of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman who died in the stabbing released a statement. The Stillwater High School honor roll student was about to start his senior year.

Family members say, in part, “Isaac had an incredibly bright future ahead of him and we are all heartbroken and devastated beyond words that his future has been tragically and senselessly cut short.”
