LA CROSSE Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A Wisconsin law firm is speaking out against La Crosse’s potential ban of conversion therapy. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty believes the ban violates free speech.
The La Crosse City Council approved an ordinance banning the practice in June but reconsidered the matter last month. The ordinance will appear before the council in September, where the institute urges the city to abandon it entirely.
“Case law on the first amendment is clear that government has no authority to declare certain viewpoints out of bounds, and then punish those who disagree or who dare to voice those viewpoints.”
The Institute for Law and Liberty says the city can expect a lawsuit if the ban is approved next month. City officials had no comment on the letter other than saying at this time, conversion therapy is not banned in La Crosse.
