CHIPPEWA FALLS Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The Chippewa Falls Police Department says a person of interest is in custody tonight after a body was found in a house fire Wednesday afternoon. Yesterday, 58-year-old Scott Vaningan was named as a person of interest in both the fire and the death.

Police chief Matt Kelm says Vaningan was located and taken into custody without incident. Officers say Vaningan’s last known address is where the fire happened. 721 Superior St. in Chippewa Falls.

“He has a violent history in the past. The investigation is very much continuing. This is not the end.”

An autopsy is being performed on the body found inside the house. The name of the person who died is not being released yet.

The fire started around 4 pm Wednesday on Superior Street. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly. Chief Kelm says the investigation into the fire and the death are ongoing.
